This week, we explore the history of ancient ceramic art in Greece- going back to where it all began as we share some facts about Greek vases.

  • Ceramic art was brought to life in Greece during the Neolithic era- that is around 6000 BC. With this feat came the production of vases.
  • In Greece, Dimini were about the first to start making markings on their vases. The work was inspired by West Asian artistry.
  • Athenian and Corinthian potters were the very best artist in Greece and they did add design and style to their vases that were sold at a relatively high price- value for money
  • The Indo European Greeks produced the Minyan ware using potter's wheel. And record has it that though this artwork was not so fascinating; it still found its way into the hearts of people
  • Vases were created with red and black colour blends, and termed 'Rainbow ware'- how ridiculous you may perceive.
  • The Greeks had different vases for different purposes. While the Hydria was used for serving water while the Amphora served wine and the Lekythos was used for storing oil.

Greek pottery has not existed on its own; there were influences across different continents. Nevertheless, Greek vase paintings have stood the test of time as it has been well preserved through thousands of centuries.
